The Equalized Club originally started life as a working men’s club that was born in two houses. Beer was drawn from barrels in the kitchens and was served in enamel jugs to the local working men. The present day club was built in the 1960’s, but it still stands on the same site of its humble origins in those two houses.

No-one knows the true story behind the name of the club, though a few local legends persist. One popular explanation is that the founders of the club were enlightened thinkers years ahead of their time and that the Equalized Club was perhaps the first working men’s club to admit women, giving rise to the name. Whilst the true answer may be lost to the mists of time, perhaps the most feasible theory is that everyone was always welcome at the club and were encouraged to treat each other as equals under its roof – from barristers to labourers. We are proud to say that this is a tradition that we carry on to this day.
